First Impressions for the New Millennium:
In the informational age of “ high tech and low maintenance” face to face interactions are becoming much less frequent and brief. Nevertheless, on the occasions when a personal meeting is required, however, how we present ourselves is still very important, although the style rules are changing rapidly. Just as e-mails have replaced formal business letters as the preferred way to correspond, traditional business attire is being replaced by casual and functional clothing and accessories.
First impressions may no longer be face-to-face. In fact, they start prior to meeting through new mediums of e-mail, video conferencing, websites and the the various social media platforms. When it finally comes, the personal encounter either confirms or changes our electronic impression. Visual elements now count for 55 percent of your message, your spoken or written words, which are weighted at almost 100 % without face-to-face contact, now only account for 7% of your communication; and your tone of voice accounts for 38%

I recently had the privilege of speaking with founder, Victoria Grantham about the history, and development of the progressive brand, her competitive advantage in development and specialized product and why she believes that you should try this brand now!
Joseph DeAcetis: Talk to Forbes about the history, and development of your brand?
Victoria Grantham: I received a Bachelor's Degree in Womenswear Design and a Master Degree in Menswear at the Royal College of Art in London. I was particularly interested in Menswear tailoring and was lucky enough to be trained alongside a Savile Row tailor and built my own hand tailored suits. Everything about my training and experience in design has led me to where I am now. I’ve always been fascinated by the functionality of menswear. The quality of men’s clothes in my opinion is way better. The way men buy their product seems more loyal. They see price, value, functionality and detail as a big purchase factor, making it more fun for me to design to at that time. My career started in New York designing for Donna Karan Menswear Collection. I was then hired by Marc Jacobs and LVMH to be the head menswear designer for Louis Vuitton in 1997. I set up and managed the Louis Vuitton Men’s Ready-to-Wear division for 3 years, before launching my own menswear collection in 2000 when I had my son.
I was also consulting for various companies including Valentino, Staff International, and Five Foxes Japan. I have lived and worked in NY, Paris, London, Milan, Rome and Japan while creating my own collections. My last role, before venturing out on my own, was as Creative Director and Head of Design for Rebecca Minkoff.
The idea for S H A R K C H A S E R first came to mind in 2011 when I moved to New York. I was carrying my cell phone in a small thin leather pouch around my body all day and felt that it was going to be harmful to my health. So I decided to do some research. At that time there was very little written on phone radiation but I was able to find some articles and videos of respected doctors who have been studying the subject for a while. I realized that there was nothing on the market that shielded cell phone radiation.
After extensive research on phone radiation, I decided to create handbags with a cell phone shielding component incorporated into the design. I wanted to combine good taste and style with a focus on how we live alongside technology.
Joseph DeAcetis: In your words, what is your competitive advantage in development and specialized product of bags
Victoria Grantham: S H A R K C H A S E R bags are designed around the idea of ‘accessories for modern living’, our relationship with technology and how we interact with it. Each bag incorporates a cell phone shield to protect the consumer from Electromagnetic Frequencies and has a unique design and aesthetic. We make luxury handbags that are considerate, minimalist and strong. I don’t want my brand to be defined by age or sex but by a beautiful accessory that protects you from a very dangerous issue that not many people are thinking about it yet.
Joseph DeAcetis: In your words, what are women seeking today in bags?
Victoria Grantham: I believe women are looking for dynamic and confident designs. They care about functionality, quality and its relative value, with a little bit of fun added into the mix!
Joseph DeAcetis: Talk to Forbes in detail about the current collection and why it is important for consumers to be aware of this brand?
Victoria Grantham: The collection will be sold twice a year to wholesale retailers and E-comm, with capsule and exclusive collections offered in each interim. Our goal and vision is to build a strong DTC network equal to 70% in 36 months. The current collection consists of 11 styles based on 2 principal forms, The Bubble and The Triangle. Both core designs are offered in various sizes and styles from micro to large, catering to different preferences and functionality. Each bag that carries a phone, has a specifically placed lining to shield the wearer up to 99.99% of the Electromagnetic Frequencies that cell phones emit.
Joseph DeAcetis: If you could choose one celebrity to wear your brand, who would it be and why?
Victoria Grantham: Alicia Keys because she is an authentic, confident and a talented woman with love for the universe and everything in it. She is the perfect celebrity to carry a S H A R K C H A S E R bag in my opinion.
Joseph DeAcetis: Why the name?
Victoria Grantham: S H A R K C H A S E R derives its name from the “Shark Chaser” repellent, a survival kit issued by the US Navy and Air Force during World War II. (Radio waves were invented for the military to communicate in the second world war). This repellant was made from a mixture of copper salts and dye in a large cloth tea bag, intended as the name suggests, to deter potential shark attacks. My handbags have been designed with a unique, independently tested and approved, radiation shielding fabric that will protect your body up to 99.99% of the electric fields and radio frequencies that cell phones emit. This material is also made from copper which is used to coat the polyester.
Joseph DeAcetis: Where is the product made and why?
Victoria Grantham: The bags are made in Italy, using the best Italian materials, by a leading handbag manufacturer. It was fundamental for me to use a factory that understood my high demands and was able to produce the best product.
Joseph DeAcetis: You have the floor: Talk to my viewers about why they should try this brand now?
Victoria Grantham: Ultimately we want to create beautiful objects that are functional. Items that allow our customers to move through their lives stylishly with confidence and ease. We know that cell phones are an important part of people’s daily routines and a moment barely goes by without them. However, invisible radio frequency radiation can alter living cells, cause changes in cell membranes, breaks in DNA and the release of chemical “stress’ messengers in the body. The same type of damage that can increase the risk of cancer, infertility and neurological diseases. These frequencies happen all the time, with phones emitting intense bursts of microwave radiation even when not on a call.
The important factor is how close we hold these devices to our body and for how long. There are some simple things you can do to protect yourself from the pollution of the 21st century and there is no reason why you should sacrifice style for health!
These are bags designed for now, classicism and functionality mixed with playful details; grounded in the necessary and combined with the luxury. S H A R K C H A S E R represents adventurous sophistication, strong aesthetics and a mindfulness of the dangers of technology.
